Austrian Audio’s OD-5 Intro

The Austrian Audio OD5 is a cardioid, active-dynamic microphone that uses the company’s own Open Acoustics technology to record an open and transparent instrument sound in the studio or live on stage. It’s ideal for musicians and sound technicians since it has a swivel-joint mechanism that allows you to make small adjustments to microphone angles without losing their position altogether. The OD5 is appropriate for use on different percussion and drums, guitar and bass cabinets, and in front of wind instruments. It has a frequency response of 20 Hz to 18 kHz and can handle up to 151 dB of SPL. The microphone is built in Vienna and subjected to the most stringent quality assurance procedures.

Targeted microphone alignment requires precise directionality. The Austrian Audio OD5 employs Austrian Audio’s Open Acoustics technology to provide a linear-cardioid polar pattern that collects sound not only from the front but also from the “bleed” from the back or side, evenly and undistorted. This guarantees that even when crosstalk from other instruments is unavoidable, the sound remains decent.

The Austrian Audio OD5 has an active-dynamic circuit, which ensures that even extended cable runs have no negative impact on the signal. Furthermore, the active-dynamic architecture enables the use of a two-position low-cut filter.

The microphone basket completely protects the active-dynamic capsule, allowing it to be safely positioned even in areas where the microphone may be knocked.

The Austrian Audio OD5 is equipped with a CAB (Cut-and-Boost) filter applied at 80 Hz, which is particularly well suited for usage with guitar amplifiers—the filter removes the useless low-frequency sound while simultaneously increasing pressure in the bass region. The mic also has a standard second-order high-pass filter at 120 Hz.

The microphone has excellent sensitivity, as is typical of condenser microphones. With an impressive 151 dB SPL (>160 dB SPL with pad), the OD5 is very resistant to overload. A -10 dB pad reduces sensitivity by lowering the capsule voltage, allowing you to utilize the mic in front of the loudest sound sources.

Versatile Swivel-Joint Mechanism

Austrian Audio engineers created a swivel arrangement for the microphone basket that allows for a 220° rotation of the field. The microphone may be properly aligned to the sound source or according to personal sound preferences without having to painfully adjust or loosen the microphone stand—frustrations such as mics slipping off or fingers pinched on the stand are no longer an issue.
