The snare drum is one of the most crucial and challenging instruments to record from a drum kit, which is why Lauten Audio has created the Snare Mic, the first FET condenser microphone made especially for snare drums. Equipped with a robust brass headframe that can withstand stick blows, a tight cardioid pickup pattern that rejects 28 dB of off-axis noise, and a high maximum SPL of 135 dB, this microphone is designed to enhance any snare recording situation with condenser sound quality and dynamic mic-like robustness.

Regardless of the snare drum, musician, or recording setting, the Snare Mic’s condenser capsule is adjusted to capture the greatest snare sound. You may use the integrated sound shaping features to turn on an 80 or 140 Hz high-pass filter to prevent kick drum and tom overflow, or a 5 or 12 kHz low-pass filter to expand bottom response and eliminate cymbal leakage. By allowing you to record detail from both the batter head and the snares, the Snare Mic’s natural 3D sound response lowers the number of microphones required for capture and avoids phasing problems. Just one and done

The conventional multi-mic arrangement required to record the whole range of a snare drum can be substituted with a single snare microphone. When positioning the Snare Mic at a lower positional angle, its three-dimensional sound allows you to hear the bottom snares through the top head.

Sound Shaping on Board

The filters on Snare Mic are not the same as those on a DAW, preamp, or mixing console. Their influence on sound quality and overall performance is far more than what their label may suggest.

 Flat High Cut: The high-frequency response of the Snare Mic remains unchanged, making it ideal for a mix-ready sound. It delivers wide, realistic top-end air while optimising stick crack and playing dynamics.

 12 kHz High Cut: reduce high-frequency distortion for a powerful microphone sound. In addition to balancing the microphone’s sound, this setting adds a drop at 7 kHz to assist in minimizing cymbal leakage and a little uptick between 12 and 15 kHz to help preserve an organic, open snare assault.

 5 kHz High Cut: lessen excessive bleeding brought on the stage noise or cymbals. With this option, the response is smoother from 1 to 7 kHz, with a little rise in the 5 to 7 kHz region and an instantaneous drop-off beyond 7 kHz. This allows for the EQ’ing back of more character, presence, and attack into a sound without emphasizing troublesome high-end information.

 Flat Low Cut: with every snare stroke, permit all low-frequency information to pass for a bottom end that pounds the chest.

 80 Hz Low Cut: this filter slightly boosts the prominence of your snare drum while reducing low-end overflow from kick and toms.

 140 Hz Low Cut: this will greatly reduce phase incoherence and overflow from kick drums and toms while maintaining the presence boost of your snare drum’s fundamental frequency.
